Multi-Party Democracy
Multi-Party Democracy

Democracies are stronger and more resilient when their citizens are empowered to have a voice in the decisions that affect their communities. Project Vote 263 seeks to promote democratic values in Zimbabwe by advocating for electoral and political reforms, promoting peace and tolerance and pushing for free and fair elections in Zimbabwe.

Advocating For Electoral and Political Reforms

There has been a general increase in the shrinking of the democratic and civic space in Zimbabwe over the last few years. In recent times we have witnessed the government enact new draconian laws such as the Private Voluntary Organization Bill (PVO), The Patriotic Act, Constitutional Amendment Acts 1 and 2, Maintenance of Public Order (MOPA) Act and the Cyber Security Act. These laws have shrunk the civic space in Zimbabwe. There has also been an increase of arrests of anti-government and civic society leaders. Project Vote 263 thus seeks to promote restoration of democratic values in Zimbabwe through advocating for the repealing of draconian laws and further alignment of the country’s laws to the constitution. Project Vote 263 is currently pushing for electoral and political reforms in line with Zimbabwe’s constitution in order to promote free and fair elections.

Promoting Peace and Tolerance

Since 1980, Zimbabwe’s political landscape has been characterized by violence and intimidation. Zimbabwe experienced a genocide that is known as the Gukurahundi that saw the mass killing of more than 20 000 people from Matebeleland and Midlands’s regions from 1983 to 1987. Zimbabwe was also further plunged into political and racial violence in the 2000s which reached a peak in 2008 when more than 200 people were reportedly murdered in acts of political violence. A lot of people were also reportedly displaced during the 2008 presidential run-off elections. To this date, Zimbabwe continues to experience pockets of violence even ahead of the 2023 harmonized elections. Project Vote 263 thus seeks to promote peace and tolerance in the Zimbabwean electoral cycle especially among young people.

Free and Fair Elections

Project Vote 263 seeks to promote free and fair elections as enshrined in Section 155 of the constitution of Zimbabwe and advocates for the implementation of the following principles of electoral processes;
