The African Institute for Young People recognizes Africa’s youth as essential drivers of political transformation, social cohesion, and peacebuilding. With a significant portion of the population under 35, young Africans possess the creativity, energy, and vision needed to strengthen democratic institutions, foster inclusive societies, and lead transformative change. Yet, youth often face barriers such as political marginalization, limited access to decision-making platforms, and structural inequalities.
Aligned with AU Agenda 2063, which envisions a peaceful, prosperous, and united Africa, and UN Security Council Resolution 2250 (2015) on youth, peace, and security, the Institute empowers young people to actively engage in political and civic life. Through mentorship, advocacy, civic education, and dialogue, youth gain platforms to participate in policy-making, community decision-making, and advocacy campaigns, ensuring their voices influence national and continental priorities.
Social cohesion and peacebuilding are approached through African indigenous strategies, including communal dialogue, consensus-building, restorative justice, and traditional conflict resolution practices. Youth are trained in mediation, dialogue facilitation, and community mobilization, equipping them to address tensions, promote reconciliation, and foster unity across ethnic, cultural, and social divides.
Guided by Pan-African principles, Ujamaa, and African intellectual traditions, the African Institute for Young People nurtures informed, responsible, and visionary leaders. By linking political engagement with social cohesion initiatives and indigenous peacebuilding practices, the Institute strengthens democratic governance, builds resilient communities, and empowers young Africans to contribute to a united, just, and self-determined Africa, ensuring the next generation drives sustainable peace, inclusive development, and transformative change for the continent.
The African Institute For Young People (AIYP) is a youth-led movement demanding change across Africa. We fight for democracy, social and economic justice, climate action, and reparations, equipping young people to dismantle exclusion and shape the continent’s future—now.
