The School of Governance and Center for Democracy is the flagship political academy of the African Institute for Young People, established to mentor and train youth who aspire to hold public office and take active roles in governance. The academy equips young Africans with the knowledge, skills, and strategic insights required to navigate political systems, lead with vision, and serve their communities with integrity.
Through a blend of mentorship, leadership training, workshops, and practical simulations, participants gain hands-on experience in policymaking, campaign management, public administration, and civic engagement. The program places a strong emphasis on ethical leadership, accountability, and democratic principles, preparing young leaders to champion transparency, citizen participation, and good governance in their spheres of influence.
Inclusivity stands at the heart of the academy, ensuring the full participation of women, marginalized groups, and persons with disabilities, thereby fostering equitable representation and leadership diversity. Drawing on Pan-African values, socialist principles, and African intellectual traditions, the School nurtures informed, visionary, and responsible youth leaders capable of shaping Africa’s political future.
Notably, the program mirrors the concept and content of the Mandela Washington Fellowship, adapting its proven model of leadership development to the African context. As a flagship initiative, it embodies the African Institute for Young People’s mission to cultivate a generation of leaders dedicated to democracy, social justice, and a self-determined Africa.
The African Institute For Young People (AIYP) is a youth-led movement demanding change across Africa. We fight for democracy, social and economic justice, climate action, and reparations, equipping young people to dismantle exclusion and shape the continent’s future—now.
